Rug making continues.Posted at 04:22 PM on February 06, 2010 | Comments (0)Even though I have been feeling like my fabric stash is starting to get down to the dregs, I was able to make two rugs yesterday. The interesting thing about this rug is that I kept trying to pair the patterned sheet with a light blue and I just didn't like it. Finally, I found that buttery yellow fabric and I knew I found the patterned sheets partner! This rug was crocheted with a set of twin-sized bedsheets, the top sheet and the fitted sheet. This is a good example of how much fabric it takes to crochet a rug. I used the entire set of sheets and the rug is only 21 inches in diameter! I went to the thrift store today and came home with three bags full of sheets and fabric. I'm washing them now so hopefully the rug making can continue! Responsibility.Posted at 04:22 PM on February 03, 2010 | Comments (0)I get fabric from a lot of places: yard sales, thrift stores, people who donate it to me, etc. Once the fabric ends up in my hands, I feel responsible for it. I had this sheet that was just so blah, it was white with little beige triangles on it. It was pale and I had it for awhile and just couldn't seem to as Tim Dunn would say, "make it work." I took a cue from that navy and white rug I made a few weeks ago (also with fabric I wasn't excited about) and paired it with a brown and white animal print sheet that was almost identical in tone. The result, very nice I think! Looks like a sandy beach, don't you think? You can't rush these things.Posted at 02:13 PM on February 01, 2010 | Comments (0)My fabric bin with my brown fabric balls was so full I could barely close it. I kept revisiting it trying to see what I could make with them, but nothing was popping out at me. Finally, I found the fabric that tied a bunch of fabric yarn I had already cut together. It was a beige sheet with dark brown butterflies. In addition to that sheet, this rug was crocheted with yarn I cut from a taupe sheet, a velour curtain panel, and scraps from corduroy pants and a knit shirt. The bin is still pretty full, so hopefully more brown ideas will come to me! I have been craving fancy coffee drinks lately and I think it is really affecting my rug-naming. This one is called Coffee and Cream Crochet Rug. Custom Nursery Room Rug.Posted at 05:22 PM on January 31, 2010 | Comments (0)The first part of 2010 I have really been focusing on my true crafty love, crocheting rugs. I've been adding a new rug to my etsy store just about every day and it has really been paying off - I've been selling more and getting more inquiries about custom orders. My first actual order from these inquiries was for a 3.5 foot diameter round rug for a nursery. The customer told me she wanted it in pastel pink, orange, green and yellow with yellow being the main color. I ran down to my craft room and pulled some fabric to show her and create her a custom listing in my etsy store.
Making custom rugs is really fun for me, but it makes me anxious too. It takes a long time to complete a rug this large and at about this point, 2.5 feet in diameter, I got nervous and stopped to e-mail her my progress. I was worried that maybe this layout of colors didn't make it look like yellow was the main color. Fortunately, she was pleased and told me to go ahead and finish it.
I finished that orange stripe last night and finished off the last rounds of yellow this morning. Can you believe that the last three rows around took an entire full sized sheet?
I hope it looks good in her nursery, I'll ask her to send me a picture of it in there and if she says OK, I'll share it with you here. Now what? Well, I've got two brown and white sheets downstairs that told me they want to team up to be a rug, so I'm off to cut them up and crochet them! |
