When Aaron and I decided to move to Carbondale last winter, I started searching for online sources of fabric because I knew the thrift store situation would not be nearly as awesome as it is in Madison. I discovered fabric mill ends - the end trimmed off of a tube of newly manufactured fabric. Were talking about thin strips of fabric yards and yards and yards long. So, essentially waste to the fabric mill, but perfect for rug makers. I found a place in Iowa that deals with fabric mills and buys the mill ends in bulk and has a warehouse to store them all. They weave and crochet rugs, but also sell the mill ends too. I placed my first order last week when I was having a freak out about my dwindling fabric stash.
My 30 pound box arrived on Friday. I ripped it open and unpacked them and admired my new materials. Pretty, huh?

Some of them were too thick to crochet without cutting in half and I wasn't sure what I was going to do about that since I thought it would take forever to do it. But, lucky for me, my mom was coming to visit! I knew she needed some project to work on while we drank tea, listened to music and caught up with each other. I put her to work cutting that tan one in the bottom right-hand corner. I used the entire roll all by itself to create this simple yet very pretty rug that measures 29 inches in diameter.

I've got a lot to work with, but am already thinking about how awesome it is to have these already cut strips of fabric. It limits my ability to pick colors because they just send you an assortment, but with more orders I'll get more and more options, right? And of course I can pair them with fabric yarn I make myself from sheets and remnants.
