This was not a good year for records I expected to deliver strong singles. While Incubus and Piebald both put out the great albums I was hoping for, the likes of Juliana Hatfield, Cake, R.E.M., Ted Leo, Matthew Sweet, Maritime, Eminem and Travis Morrison have a lot to answer for. Even the new Handsome Boy Modeling School record, which might end up on my list of the year's top albums, didn't really bring any top singles to the mix. On the other hand, a lot of new acts stepped up this year and showed a lot of potential to look forward to in the future.
